Action Research Plan

After much reading, researching and reflection I have finally created the blueprint for my Acttion Research Project.  I have included the question, rationale, and template for everyone to read and review.  I would really appreciate any  and all feedback.

Will the implementation of SLOs (Student Learning Objectives), at COHS, result in a marked improvement in lowering the achievement gap of our Economically Disadvantages students?
In 2011-2012, the Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD student population identified as Economically Disadvantaged stood at 65.4%.  During that school year, the percentage of students identified in this sub-population at the high school was 51% for 10th grade, 63% for 11th grade, and 18% taking TAKS-M.  The economically disadvantaged population includes all genders, ethnicities, and special services.  This group represents a cross-section of the student populations.  This year, 2012-2013, the economically disadvantage population makes up 57.5% of the student population.  This percentage is roughly the same as last year.  Taking into account the change in the student population from year to year, there has been no significant change in the achievement gap.  Because of a TIF Grant that was recently awarded, COCISD will be implementing a number of changes.  One such change is the use of SLOs in all content areas. Unlike other programs which have been utilized in the past, this is a process focused on individual student growth, by targeting individual student needs.  By creating a rigorous goal for student growth in all students, lowering of the achievement gap should show a marked improvement.

  1. Deborah,

I like the direction of your study. I think that a solid implementation of student learning objectives will surely lead to increased student achievement. I am curious, are the SLO's new for the entire district and in every subject area? I think every campus could benefit from your study. Is your study focused in one subject area, or are you targeting all subjects for economically disadvantaged students? I look forward to seeing the great things that happen as a result of your study. If you have time, please visit my blog at: www.vickidibler.blogspot.com and tell me what you think. Thank you!

  3. Deborah,
Analyzing the effects of SLOs is a great topic! I am interested to see your results. Our district is very stong on holding us to SLO. I know in my own classroom I have it large and visible and update it daily. I sometimes question if the are beneficial to the overal learning of the students. Great topic! I would appreciate your feedback on my blog as well :) http://voulamav.blogspot.com/

  4. I agree with the other post that this is something that can be a very valuable plan to research. For our school I know that these students struggle the most and it is due to issues most of the time outside of the school climate. If there is a way to implement the SLO as mentioned early and provide some sort of structure that these students need I think that you are on the way to some great success. Good luck.

  5. Deborah,
I think that your action research will definetly help out your school. I read your action research plan and it looks very well organized. Are you going to get an action research team to help you with the progression of your action research? Your districts implemntation of the SLO program is going to really benefit the students at your district. Good luck with your action research and lets keep the communication channels open.
